Project S04 - Passive Sub-mm Localization System

For an accurate material map generated by a mobile device, a highly accurate real-time localization system for such mobile device has to be ultimately available within MARIE. Since the technology being investigated in the C-projects could be also exploited for such localization purposes, the aim of S04 is to invent a novel THz based localization system and to understand its performance. Note that first simulations indicate the potential of sub-mm accuracy inside rooms with the use of future MARIE’s transceivers – an accuracy which is two orders of magnitude greater than in today’s radio based indoor localization systems.

In addition to the high localization precision, the infrastructure used for localization should be energy-autonomous in order to not restrict the usefulness of MARIE’s research findings. Therefore, Dielectric Resonators (DRs), being entirely passive, will be applied in the targeted localization system and will be investigated in the companion project C09. While such DRs can be distinguished well in principle from other objects due to their significant decay time after charging the resonator, the extremely low received signal power at the transceiver may severely limit the coverage of the overall localization method. However, one solution to still achieve full room coverage is a suitable small grid spacing of the DRs. Last but not least, the DRs need a unique identifier and a known position. While the latter can be calibrated once, then stored in a data base and provided to the mobile device, the former can be solved by assigning bit patterns to certain resonance frequency combinations of several DRs, which are assembled to a tag. However, note that the detection of such assignment is not trivial in a complex surrounding with severe clutter and multipath propagation.

The major scientific challenges of S04 can be therefore summarized as follows: to completely design the overall localization system, to uniquely determine the tag identification, to achieve full room coverage, to maximize the localization accuracy and ultimately also to proof the concept.

In summary, S04 provides the required localization system for the MARIE consortium based on an energy-autonomous infrastructure with unrivalled localization accuracy and therefore contributes significantly to the vision of MARIE.
